about joy
WaltDr. Walt Kallestad
Senior Pastor—Assigned to a tiny Lutheran congregation in Glendale, Arizona in 1978, Walt Kallestad quickly learned humility and value of strong communications: Within the first few months, the congregation had dropped by 50 percent, and the young idealist was faced with the challenge of rebuilding constituency or finding a new profession.

The challenge has obviously been met. Today, under Walt's direction, Community Church of Joy supports nearly 8,000 participants. Walt is a graduate of Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, and Luther-Northwestern Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, and received his doctorate at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. He spends his leisure time with Mary, his wife and best friend, their grown children and grandchildren, pursuing interests in writing, music and golf. waltk@joyonline.org

PaulDr. Paul Sorensen
Lead Pastor—Prior to joining the Community Church of Joy staff in 1987, Paul organized a national touring group, leadership training seminars, retreats, conferences and developed international ministry teams. As Lead Pastor of Community Church of Joy, Paul has helped launch a variety of new ministries, such as the small group and new member assimilation ministries, Joy's family camp, Joy Christian School, and the Church Coach Network. As Chief Operating Officer of the Joy Company, Paul assembled development teams and authored strategic business plans for many of Joy's projects on their 200-acre campus and consulted with churches in their strategic and campus planning.

Paul Sorensen grew up in Iowa, attended St. Olaf College, and graduated from Metropolitan State University (B.A) and Luther Theological Seminary (M.Div.). He recently completed his Ph.D. in business, with specializations in leadership and non-profit management. Paul loves spending time with Carol, his wife of 25 years, and his three children. pauls@joyonline.org

GarethGareth Robinson
Worship Pastor—Gareth is married to Lizzy and they have three children, Daisy, Lucy, and Toby. He took Biblical Studies at Sheffield University, trained as an elementary school teacher, and taught for five years before joining the church team at St. Thomas' Church, Sheffield, where he worked under Mike Breen, leading the worship there, and for two years also led a congregation for young adults.

He started learning to play guitar aged 10, and played in Sunday school, youth group, home group, and eventually church. His desire in leading and teaching about worship is to help people become all God has made them to be, using all the Father has given them in Christ through the Holy Spirit. He has a passion for writing songs—songs that not only teach the people of God about their Lord but also engage them with the very heart of the Trinity as they sing. His influences range from Matt Redman to Brian Doerksen, from Delirious to Charles Welsey! He has released three CDs of his own songs in the UK through Kingsway Music. garethr@joyonline.org
